Second Daisy Award to celebrate extraordinary nurses

DAISY 1Greene County Medical Center will  honor a second DAISY Award winner at a public ceremony Thursday, Nov. 20, at a 10 am in the long term care activity room.

The medical center held its first DAISY Award ceremony in August when Jenny Taylor, director of clinical services, was awarded this special recognition. In total, 13 nurses were nominated for the first award.

The internationally-known DAISY Award has been used to recognize thousands of “extraordinary nurses” for exceptional patient care for the past 15 years. More than 1,700 medical facilities worldwide honor nurses with the DAISY Award.

At the November 20 public ceremony, 10 nominees will be recognized, the recommendations will be read and then one winner will be announced. The DAISY Award winner will receive a certificate and a “Healer’s Touch” sculpture, hand-carved by artists of the Shona tribe in Africa.

Starting in 2015, the DAISY Award will be given twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Nomination boxes are located throughout the medical center. Nominations can be made by patients, their family members, caretakers, community members and co-workers. Chief nurse executive Katie Heldt noted that “the enthusiasm within the medical center and the community lets us know that we have a lot of great nurses deserving recognition.”

November DAISY Award nominees are: Andrea Allbee, Janelle Cates, Allie Hamillton, Abby Skoglund, Kim Tasler, Dawn (Hoskins) Tingwald and Tammy Zuber, all acute care; Laine Custer and Becky Wolf, public health; and Kathi Hoskins, surgery.
